Diagnostic (reading/erasing error codes, live data, programming)

image18Most cars equipped with an ECU (Engine Control Unit) petrol or diesel engine have the ability to read error codes, live data (engine parameters; engine speed, coolant temperature, …) and to view specific information of the ECU. Error codes and live data can give the mechanic in question very valuable information once an error or malfunction is happening to your car.

There are different manufacturers of equipment and software to read out/delete error codes and live data from ECUs. The so called universal equipment and brand specific ones. Brand specific ones cover more functions than just reading/erasing and show live data. Most of them can code and program ECUs there were applicable. Karreman Engineering has universal equipment to read out every car and brand specific equipment which is expanding over the years.

The current list of dealer level equipment to service your car is as follows:

  • BMW Group (BMW/Mini/Rolls Royce)
  • VAG(Audi/VW/Seat/Skoda)
  • Porsche
  • PSA (Peugeot & Citroen)
  • Toyota
  • GM Opel

The following brands are being acquired in the near future

  • Renault

Other brands that will follow but on longer time base are

  • Daimler Mercedes Benz
  • Volvo

Other systems we can read out are:

  • VialleLPi systems (Liquid Propane injection)

Please be aware that we can read out all brands with universal equipment.

Genuine MAF replacements

MassAirFlow sensors (MAFs)

The Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors used in electronic engine management systems can be defective or malfunctioning by time. Karreman Engineering is able to read out the engine control unit and check if your MAF is defective. If your MAF is defective we offer genuine replacements for Bosch and Siemens MAFs for a reduced price.

Untitled-5Untitled-6

The MAFs we sell are not a copy or imitations but genuine. We have experienced only trouble with copies and imitation MAFs. From large fuel trim deviations on petrol engines to smoking diesel engines. We (Karreman Engineering) have tested and inspected the MAFs from our supplier on a selected amount of customers cars to check durability and working. No deviations are observed during the testing period and durability is generally checked. The MAFs are sold with a 2 year warranty giving the best feeling a customer can get about the product we are selling. Below a list of MAFs can be observed with cross reference to manufacture part number and prices.

ECU/Module repair

Examples of modules we can repair are the following:

  • BMW E36 IHKA (A/C heating fail)
  • BMW E46 GM5 module (central locking fail)
  • More to come

Programming & Coding

Coding is setting the vehicle modules correctly for the type of vehicle. A short overview of what can be coded is presented below:

  • Mileage settings to [km/h] or [mph]
  • DRL (Daytime Running Lights).
  • Visual and acoustic acknowledgement for closing/opening the car by remote control
  • Language settings (also in navigation)
  • Adding auxiliary heating settings
  • Adding auxiliary input on audio devices
  • Much & much more…

We are currently able to perform extensive coding on a numerous amount of car brands and vehicles. If you know or if you would like to know if it is possible for your car please contact us since we have a growing list of hardware interfaces that could perform the coding you desire.

Besides setting specific values in modules for functionality. We can code 2nd hand modules or devices to your car. While some manufacturers or dealerships will attend you to buy a brand new one because you can not link a 2nd hand module to your car, we can! In most cases the old data is retrieved from the damaged part (if possible) and copied to the 2nd hand one.

Equipment

Oscilloscope

Untitled-1

Untitled-2

With the help of an oscilloscope voltages and currents can be displayed to trace faults in systems. We have a 4 channel oscilloscope available which is able to handle speed compared to CAN-BUS systems. With the equipment wiring diagrams and previews of measurements are available. With previews the chance of faults made by investigating the signal as wrong is as good as minimal. Giving our staff and you the less time to repair your car once necessary.

Common rail return flow

Besides an oscilloscope we have 2 different ways to measure the return flow of (diesel) injectors. The general method is to catch the returned fuel into a cup and compare individual returned volumes with each other. A high amount of returned fuel is a sign of a faulty injector. This method is easy, in-expensive to apply and gives in most cases the best result.

Besides catch up cups we have a device that can measure the flow of each cylinder (up to 4) and log these during driving. The device came when return flow system were applied under pressure, the general catch up method could not be applied giving a restriction to measure return flow for diagnostic reasons. When a problem occurs this return flow device can observe the return flows of the connected cylinders during driving circumstances. Were the catch up cans can only be applied to idle situations.

Smoke tester

Engines can leak through gaskets or tears due to age or high level of vibration. When air, oil, coolant or exhaust gasses leaks through it might not always be detectable when the engine is stationary or not operated at high load conditions. A smoke tester can help finding the leaks more easily. Smoke is entered to the specified part that needs to be tested. This can be intake air systems, lubrication systems, coolant systems and exhaust system. When a tear or broken gasket is present, smoke will flow through the tear or broken gasket. This can be observed by the technician easily.

Airbag module crash data reset

airbagimageKarreman Engineering offers a service to delete the crash data written in the memory of the airbag module. Normally after a collision so called “crash data” is permanently written in the memory and can’t be deleted by easy access by example the OBD port. The module can’t be used in the car because it will illuminate the airbag light on the instrument panel no matter if you delete the error memory.Karreman Engineering is able to delete the crash data contained in the airbag module so you don’t have to buy a brand new module. You would ask yourself why the manufacturer didn’t enable this option? The data recorded and stored during the collision might be important for the police or government. To avoid an easy erase of data a protection is made. To delete the data the content of an EPROM must be obtained and in most cases this EPROM must be desoldered. Not just a push of a button to delete it.

A list of modules can be observed below by clicking the link. If the module you have isn’t available in the list please contact us since the list is refreshing by time.

Instrument cluster pixel repair

The pixels in the instrument clusters of BMW E39 (5 series), E38 (7 series) and E53 (X5) are a common example of pixel failures. Unpleasant, especially since you can’t see the error(s) coming up when hearing the “gong”. Karreman Engineering is able to repair your instrument cluster with a glance of the costs of a new one. Included in the repair is a brand new repair cable that fixes damaged pixels. Were some repair shops only clean the part we replace the faulty item.
